Warwickshire Div 3
Losing Draw
Pak 328 – 8
Elf 180 – 5

No Match Photos this week!

An Elford ‘8 man side' managed the impossible by avoiding defeat away at Pak Shaheen. The omens weren't good for Elford, who after losing the toss were asked to field in the sun. The 7 men present at the start decided to make the best of it, with each fielder taking up a little quarter of the field to themselves. Despite the low numbers , Elford remained in high spirits and quickly dismissed the openers thanks to Matt Stone. Elford ' s number was increased to 8 in the 15 th over , thanks to Sam Leech who promptly turned up and took a catch. Tony Allen took a wicket with his first ball for the 1sts this season, before resorting to bowling full tosses. Danny Haines and Simon Smith toiled away in long spells but were rewarded with 2 wickets a piece. Pak Sheen somewhat surprisingly decided to bat the full 50 overs and posted a massive 328 – 8.

Elford got off to worst possible start as Danny Hackett was caught behind off a vicious ball in the first over. Matt Stone came and went in a whirlwind, blasting several boundaries before being dismissed LBW. Sam Leech looked in good touch with 31, but things were looking decidedly grim for Elford who left teetering on 111 – 5 off 25 overs. With Pak shaheen needing only 2 wickets to wrap a comprehensive victory, Elford closed the game down. Rich Collett hit an unbeaten 54 while Simon Smith remained unbeaten on 39 as the pair batted for 25 overs.

Warwickshire Div 3

Elford suffered their heaviest defeat of the season as they crashed to a 9 wicket defeat at home to K&D. Having been inserted into bat first, Elford struggled from the outset with the lack of pace from the pitch. Danny Hackett battled for a hard fought 24 while Rob Collett chipped in with a breezy 18 before being caught. Elford looked set for a very early finish as they slumped to 72 – 7 of 20 overs, before the tail wagged. Matt Stone blasted a quickfire 23, while Ant Wright 23 and Danny Haines made sure Elford made it to the 48 th over before finally being dismissed for 149.

Knowle & Dorridge made short work of the total, latching on to any loose delivery to see the visitors home in 28 overs. Matt Stone took the solitary wicket for Elford, on a dathe club will been keen to put behind them.

Next up, Pak Shaheen....

Warwickshire League Div 3

Won by 2 wkts
WEU 173ao
Elf 174 - 8

Match Photos >

Elford won a crucial victory on their way to retaining their Div 3 status, despite a nervy ending. Elford won the toss and promptly inserted the home side into bat first, on a slow and wet wicket. Danny Haines made the early inroads dismissing the openers to take 3 - 38 off 13, with some variable bounce! He wasn't the only bowler to enjoy some success though. Simon Smith and Ant Wright both claimed a scalp each, while Gaz Starkey in his first appearance for the 1sts in 3 seasons, rolled backed the years to mop up the tail with 3 -18 off 4. Sharp fielding and safe hands all played their part as Elford took every chance they were presented. Ward End were dismissed for 173 in 44 overs.

Elford had got through their overs so quickly (2 hours 5 mins) that they were sent out to bat for 45 mins until Tea Time. Elfords batsman obviously had thoughts of either finishing the game before Tea or the food itself, as they made a quick fire start. However with wickets falling at virtually the same rate at which boundaries were being scored, Elford faltered to 60 - 4 at Tea. With settled stomachs and minds, Elford resumed with a steadier approach as Rich Collett 63* and Dave Emery 48 put on 90 for the 7th wicket, virtually leading Elford home. With the scores tied, and Emery needing 2 for his half century the scene was set. Unfortunately the batsman hadn't read the script and Emery was comically run out. The ever dependant, Smith then proceeded to get a second baller leaving a twitchy Ant Wright out to bat. Ironically the game was finished with a No Ball, as Elford eventually won with 2 wickets and 25 overs to spare.

Essington & Great Wyrley 1sts vs Sunday Sun XI
Lichfield League Div 4

Lost by 81 runs
EGW 201 - 5
Elf 120ao

The Elford Sun side (happy to have 11 players) continued their topsy turvy season as they travelled to league leaders Essington & Great Wyrley. With the game played on a artificial wicket and outfield that came with a health warning, the Elford players looked inquiringly on at the "wicket". Wyrley won the toss and batted first. Paul Baldwin bowled tightly to claim 1 for 14 off 8 while Danny Haines demonstrated their was a little life in the pitch by bowling the opener and cracking a stump in the process. The Wyrley talisman, Lee Bates was the main thorn in Elford side as he top scored with 73 despite being dropped several times. The home side took full advantage of sloppy fielding to post 201 - 5 off 40 overs. Elford's reply centred around Matt Stone who smacked 66 off 42 balls including several massive straight sixes. Unfortunately, no other Elford batsman could hang around long enough at the crease as they collapsed from 67 - 1 to 120ao, to claim 1 point.

Bar 259 - 2
Elf 179 ao

Match Photos >

Elford slid into the relegation zone as they fell 7 balls short of saving the game at league leaders Barby. In gloomy and wet conditions and with the batsman needing windscreen wipers to see the ball, Elford's final two batsman stubbornly stayed at the crease for nearly 11 overs. However, with increased desperation and appealing, Barby finally got their way as Paul Baldwin was adjudged LBW with an over to go.

Barby had dominated earlier proceedings as they took full advantage of a slow but firm batting track. Helped by dropped catches and some streaky strokes, Barby's openers put on 127 for the first wicket. However their was to be no rest bite for the Elford bowlers as the Barby opener, Rob Field carried his bat for 125, leading the home side to 259 -2.

Elford were solid enough in their reply with Tony Allen (39) and Sam Leech scoring at the required run rate. However after Leech holed out for 11, the elevated Matt Stone took up his mantle blasting 19 off his first 5 balls. Stone went onto 82 in his best innings for club to date. Unfortunately no other batsman could spend long enough at the crease to help the run chase, with Elford regularly losing wickets. With little chance of victory left, Paul Baldwin and Danny Haines 'wooded up' for the remaining 11 overs in deteriorating conditions, only to fall disappointingly short in the 48th over.

Elford 1sts vs Hampton & Solihull 1sts

Lost by 27 runs
H&S 213 -6
Elf 187ao

Match Photos >

Elford were left to rue several early departures as they lost narrowly to Hampton & Solihull. Chasing 214 for victory, Elford had looked well poised on 103 - 2 off 23 overs, only to fall 27 runs short with 10 men.

Having elected to bat field first, Elford were made to work hard, chasing the ball around in the sun. The Opening batsman gave few chances away and looked well in control of proceedings at 124 -0 off 25 overs. However, Danny Haines trapped M Palmer LBW for 74 sparking a turn around the home side. Rob Drabble rolled back the years to take 4 - 42 off 14, helped by Tony 'Trucker' Allen, who must have benefited from the prematch fielding practise, taking two decent catches at mid off. Elford's tight bowling and fielding helped peg Hamptons innings down to a contained 213 - 6 off 50 overs.

Elfords reply was hampered by early departures, as their line up was reduced to 10 men. However, they raced out of the starters blocks as Simon Smith blasted a quickfire 55, before he too had to make an early exit. However it wasn't until Rich Collett (41) was adjudged LBW that Elford really lost their way. Dave Emery (21) and Ant Wright (17) both made good starts before being dismissed leaving Elford stumbling on 152 – 6. After Rich Collets departure the Elford runchase lost its way a little and despite some late hefty blows, Elford were dismissed for 187 in the 44 over.

Lichfield Div 4
Elford vs BridgeTrust OB

Won by 56 runs
Elf 192 ao
BTOB 136 - 3

Match Photos >

The Sunday side returned to winning ways with a comfortable XX run victory over BridgeTrust OB. The visitors had made little interest in chasing Elford's modest total of 192ao as the game petered out well before the end.

In a rain effected innings, Elford had been in trouble at 94 for 5 before stand-in skipper Ant Wright (53) and Danny Haines (23) put on 80 for the 6th wicket. Wright showed the way hitting his first half century of the season with 51 including several lofty blows. Before the rain had reduced the game to 37 over a side the ever dependable Rich Collett hit a classy 40, There had also been notable contributions with the bat from youngsters Steph Hollingsworth (17) and Danny Hackett (23).

BridgeTrust showed little intent of chasing the runs down after they lost a couple of 2 nd wicket in the 20th over, they seemed to give up any chance of victory. Despite the slow pitch and the modest total BridgeTrust finished on 136 - 4 of 37 overs, as Elford used an array of bowlers for interest.

On a blustery day, which had already claimed the side screens as its first victims, Elford decided to brave the conditions in the field first. The Visitors made steady progress posting 223 – 8 with the wickets shared amongst all the bowlers.

Elford's reply was held together by Rob Collett who scored a well earned 52 in his first innings of the season. However after he was dismissed by a sharp catch, Elford looked doomed on 112 – 7. Fortunately for Elford, Tony Allen (40) & Captain Jimmy Edgar (33) steadied the innings, helping to steer the game back towards the home side. Elford notched up their first win of the season as they beat Bulkington by 6 wkts on a warm afternoon. Stand in Skipper Rich Collett won the toss and decided to bowl first on a hard track. A Tight bowling line from Matt Stone and Danny Haines accompanied with an array of short balls helped peg the visitors to 58 – 3 off 20 overs. Bulkingtons middle order accelerated the run rate thanks mainly to C Noon who hit 91, before Rob Drabble and Ant Wright picked up some late wickets to keep the visitors down to 225 – 6.

Elford batsman finally filled some of their potential and put some recent bad form behind them. Tony Allen hit a quick fire 20 with just 5 scoring shots, while his opening partner, Danny Hackett went onto a season best 65. He shared a stand of 123 with Sam Leech as the pair took the game away from Bulkington. Danny Haines bowled accurately again, picking up 3 – 16 off 8 while Geoff Hackett bowled with a heavy leg side field to pick up 3 – 38 off 3. Milford eventually finished well short of the target on 154 – 9 but will surely take heart from some promising young players in their side.

Elford crashed to their defeat of the season as they let Griff & Coton back into the game, who won with 1 ball to spare. After losing the toss again, Elford were put into bat first after a prematch rain shower. Like previous weeks before, Elford had look set to make a large total as the top order fired with the bat. Opener, Tony Allen found the middle of his bat and hit a useful 24, While Simon Smith (47) continued his good form hitting the ball to each corner of the park. Leading run scorer, Rich Collett looked equally as good as he finished on 56*. However Elford once again hit the implode button, as they slumped from 132-3 to 180-8, including 3 golden ducks, and a dismissal for obstruction! Elford were finally bowled out for 191 of 46 overs.

Griff's relpy was slow and steady, as the openers struggled against the Elford bowlers. Despite having to field with 10 men for the entire Griff Innings, Elford looked to be in control as Griff struggled to 90 - 4 of 34 overs. However Griff's middle order were made of sterner things, despite riding their luck on occasions, (the ball even hit the stumps without the bail falling off!) Despite a late couple of wickets falling, it wasnt Elfords day, as Griff scraped home with a ball and 3 wickets to spare. Elford were left to rue the fact they once again hadnt used all their overs.

Lost by 7 wickets
Elf 149 ao
CB 150 - 3

No photos this week!

Elford lost their second game of the season as their recent poor form with the bat followed them to Castle Bromwich. With Captain Paul Bozward away, Simon Smith took the reigns for the day. Unfortunately he lost the toss, (Elford haven't won one yet this season!) and unsurprisingly found them selves batting first. Although the pitch wasnt quick, it produced plenty of early demons with the ball moving around off the deck. Simon Smith led from the top hitting a patient 63, while Rich Collett (18) had looked set until he holed out at deep square leg. Unfortunately an array of rash shots led to Elfords downfall, as they slumped from 123 - 3 to 149ao inside 10 overs. The Australian P Quinn was the main thorn in Elfords side as he took 6 - 26, showing how badly Elford currently miss a spin bowler.

Castle Bromwich's run chase was solid and steady, giving little away. With 55 overs to chase down 150 they never really looked in any major trouble, despite some tight fielding and bowling. Castle Bromwich reached their target with 10 overs and 7 wickets to spare.

In reply, Rushall proved their was still a little movement with the ball as Elford struggled early on. Elford played their part in an enthralling rain effected game away at Knowle & Dorridge. Having been asked to bat first, Elford made a stop start to their inning, with the players leaving the field on several occasions due to passing showers. On the field, Elford struggled to score runs as tight bowling and a slow outfield restricted the run rate. Rich Collett was once again in good form as he took advantage when ever there was the chance of a quick single. Collett top scored on 32, supported by skipper Paul Bozward (26) as the pair eased Elford from 51 – 5 to 120 – 6. A Late collapse ensued, as Elford were bowled for 146 inside 45 overs.

With the game reduced in overs, K&D were set 147 to win off 43 overs. However tight bowling from Matt Stone & Danny Haines, proved the conditions had got no better to bat in. The pair restricted the home side to 14- 2 off 14 overs. The game ebbed and flowed with both teams sniffing the chance of a victory. Some lofty blows followed by some quick wickets meant a nervy end to the innings. Ant Wright did the damage with the ball for Elford claiming 5 – 40 off 15. With 2 overs to go, a victory, a defeat, a losing draw, a winning draw and a tie were all still possible due to the quirky nature of the rain affected rules. K&D eventually needed 6 runs to win with 1 wicket left off the final over. However K&D closed on 141 – 9 to claim a winning draw by 3 runs in a close but enjoyable game.

Elford 1sts vs Sheldon Marlborough
April 19 2008

Elford could only muster 9 willing volunteers to brave the artic conditions against Sheldon in a friendly fixture. Having repaired the sidescreens prior to the start of the game, both teams looking like theyd rather be anywhere else than playing cricket. New captain Paul Bozward elected to have bowl a first and led his team out into the howling wind. Sporting several layers and wooly hats, Elford struggled to plug the holes in the field, as Sheldon took advantage, sneaking singles in abundance. Sheldon finished on 182-5 of 40 overs, as Ant Wright and newcomer Matt Stone got amongst the wickets.

Elford reply didn't get off to the best start as they crashed to 8 -3 before Rich Collett and Malc MacDonald (41) steadied the ship. However after the pair departed Elford slumped to 93-8 (ao). No doubt the game would have been a lot closer with 11 players, but was nether the less a useful pre season ‘warm up' game.
