1999 Review by the Captains

Saturday First XI

The first XI had an average season. This resulted in the team finishing mid way in the table. There were several good points which can be taken from the season. Alex Gray scored his first team maiden half century at Robirch Phoenix and Gary Allen had excellent season with the bat. Looking to the future, the team has huge potential and the attendance at the pre season nets suggest there will be fierce competition for places. If the team can achieve a level of consistency to match its potential during the coming season, it should be an exciting one.

Saturday Second XI

Last year we won 6 games, 2 of which were against teams that won promotion, which proves we have the ability to be a very successful team, it is the consistency we lack. This year we hope for the senior players to perform to the top of their ability and the younger players to show great improvement of which we know they are capable.

Elford Sunday Team

1999 marked a watershed for the Elford Sunday team as the squad took a more youthful look than ever before with an average of just under 21. Competing in the Lichfield and District Division 3 the side finished a creditable 6th overall under the stand in skipper Danny Haines. The team found it hard going to begin with against some highly competitive teams, but as the season continued results and confidence began to appear in abundance. This was emphasised with the 121 run win over league rivals Armitage. There were also some fine individual achievements especially from leading run scorer Gary Allen who scored 107 not out against league winners Hammerwich.

Wicket Keeper Rob Wright also played extremely well with the bat averaging over 25 runs a game. Ant Wright also had a very good season with the ball as he became leading wicket taker with 19 wickets. However the whole team learnt a lot from 1999 and will hopefully put the experiences of the past season to good use in a bid for promotion in 2000.

Elford Annual six-a-side Cup Winners

REPORT OF ANNUAL END OF YEAR 6 a SIDE

Elford CC ended the season on a high as they swept a side Lullington Park to lift the annual end of year 6 a side sponsored by Aston Science Park and Stubby Leas Resthome. The trophy finally returns back to Elford after at least a 15-year absence.

The hosts, Elford (fielding 2 sides) were amongst 8 other local teams which included Derbyshire outfit Lullington Park, North Warwickshire CC, Aston OE (who unfortunately dropped out) and Burton league sides Hopwas, Wilnecote and Whittington. Elford reached the final after easing to victory over local league rivals Wilnecote and Elford B who had reached the semi finals through a bye. Lullington also played well to push a side a strong combination of Whittington and last years finalists North Warwick. However Lullington slipped up with the bat as Elford fielded and bowled very well to keep the holders down to a mere 30 off 5 overs. Elford eased to victory with an over and half to spare with all their wickets intact to claim a well-deserved victory.
